Institutional or organisational abuse doesn’t just involve sexual abuse, it can include physical, emotional, as well as psychological abuse. Generally, every case will be different, and everyone will experience varying degrees of abuse within the same or similar institution or organisation.
What applies to all institutions and organisations regardless or location or structure is that it is unacceptable, unjustifiable, and against the law to abuse anyone within your care.
A few examples of institutions or organisations where abuses have been revealed and prosecuted are:
In many of these locations, the abuse is committed by staff or personnel who take advantage of their position of power to abuse those in their care or protection.
In certain instances, institutional or organisational abuse can occur over years or even decades. This is because of a damaging culture where abuses are ignored, overlooked, or covered up to protect the name of the institution.
We need to be aware that times have changed and many cases of abuse in well-known schools, correction centres, religious institutions and care homes have been exposed and prosecuted.

Institutional abuse can also be referred to as organisational abuse depending on the location and context of abuse.
This occurs when individuals or groups are neglected or caused to suffer due to poor care practices within an institution, organisation or care setting.
This includes one-off incidents or incidents which take place regularly over a long period of time.
At times there can be more than one abuser involved and when numerous individuals have been abused, often they might not be aware that it has also occurred to others in the same institution.
